Following rigorous validation, we have developed an engineering-plastic solution that combines ultra-low reflectance with exceptional resistance to demanding environmental conditions. Our proprietary PCA™ material works in combination with an advanced ion-coating surface treatment to achieve industry-leading reflectance control on plastic substrates. Based on the publicly available data we have reviewed, we believe this is the first injection-moldable plastic solution to achieve this level of reflection suppression with consistent performance and a process ready for volume production.

Light-Absorption Comparison: Plastic Substrate Before and After Coating
Core Technology Highlights
Optical Performance
After ion coating, PCA™ exhibits substantially lower surface reflectance than comparable plastic products currently on the market. Its optical performance can match or even exceed that of some machined metal components, creating a low-stray-light environment for imaging systems and optical paths.
Environmental Reliability
The specially optimized formulation, whose composition is proprietary, provides strong resistance to acids and alkalis, high reliability, and sustained temperature resistance up to 140 °C. High hardness and excellent mechanical properties support long-term use in demanding applications such as automotive electronics and outdoor optical systems.
Process Compatibility
PCA™ is engineered to work with our ion-coating equipment and process. Strong coating adhesion and good uniformity deliver substantially higher production yields than trials using other domestically sourced substrates, supporting economical volume manufacturing.

A Broad Range of Applications
This development expands the options for high-performance optical components beyond machined metal. Injection molding combined with ion coating can be used for:
- Spacer rings, lens barrels, lens mounts and other structural components in optical lens modules.
- Optical channels, light shields and collimator mounts in optical communications equipment.
- Precision systems that are highly sensitive to stray light, including medical imaging equipment, AR/VR optical engines and LiDAR.
Compared with metal machining, injection molding can substantially reduce unit costs, shorten lead times and produce complex geometries as a single molded part, giving designers greater freedom.
Development Partnership and Technical Support
This technology was jointly developed by Yamagata Optical and a leading materials research institute in Japan. We hold the complete coating-process and material-application know-how, while our Japanese partner provides expertise in base-resin modification. Each partner contributes its specialist capabilities to deliver distinctive product performance and a stable supply chain.
The PCA™ formulation is protected as core proprietary technology. Coating services and technical support are available to customers worldwide, and we welcome collaboration on customized applications.
Market Position
We believe the combination of PCA™ and ion coating is currently the only mature commercial technology in the global optical-plastics market to deliver both ultra-low reflectance and environmental durability suitable for automotive applications. By developing the material and coating process together, we offer the optics industry a practical route to lower costs and more efficient production.

Ion Coating Dramatically Reduces Baffle-Ring Reflectance
Yamagata Optical's ion-coating process reduces baffle-ring reflectance by a factor of 8.6. In addition to multiple solutions for suppressing stray light at the aperture edge, we can apply an ultra-low-reflectance ion coating to both sides of the film used to manufacture baffle rings. After treatment, reflectance can fall below 0.3%, substantially improving camera-module optical performance.
Yamagata Optics lens hood ion plating technology
After ion-plating treatment, Yamagata Optics has achieved an 8.6-fold reduction in the reflectance of its aperture. Currently, in addition to multiple anti-glare and stray-light suppression solutions for the inner bore of the aperture, Yamagata Optics can also apply ultra-low-reflection ion-plating to both sides of the raw-material light-shielding film. Following this anti-reflection treatment, the reflectance can be reduced to below 0.3%, significantly enhancing the optical performance of the camera.
In optical imaging, light can be both essential and disruptive. An unwanted ray may reflect off a lens-barrel wall, scatter from a spacer ring or diffract at a baffle edge. The result can be ghosting, halos, light streaks, ripple-like artifacts or veiling glare that washes out the image. Together, these forms of stray light undermine image clarity, contrast and signal-to-noise ratio.
